Woodloch Voted "Top 10 Green Businesses" in the Poconos

The Pocono Business Journal has compiled a list of businesses most active in "Going Green" to help preserve Mother Earth. Woodloch, a member of the Green Hotel Association, is very proud to have made this list. The Woodloch Resort Green Team meets monthly to discuss ideas and investigate solutions for reducing the environmental impact of the business while maintaining customer satisfaction. Specific initiatives include:
Bio-degradable disposable plate ware, flatware and to-go containers are being used instead of Styrofoam and plastic. The product being used, Greenware™ is a starch-based product that is non-toxic and decomposes within 30 to 45 days. Specially designed energy-saving faucets and showerheads were installed six to eight years ago resulting in reduced water output while increasing water pressure. Additionally infrared-sensor faucets also contribute to water conservation efforts. Additional water conservation efforts are apparent with the increased popularity of the guests opting to reuse their towels and linens during their stay at the resort. Since starting this program five years ago, currently over 40% of the guests are choosing this option. Public and guest lighting for the entire resort has been converted to compact fluorescent lighting resulting in longer lifespan of the bulb and more energy efficiency. All recycling efforts at the resort are self-imposed resulting in an all-encompassing recycling program. All office paper is used as scrap then packed and transported to the Wayne County Recycling Center along with bailed corrugated paper and an average of 700 pounds of separated glass. At this point, there is no reimbursement for these efforts. Metal cans and products are picked up by a private hauler and recycled. To date over 4,000 pounds of computers, printers and monitors have been shipped, at Woodloch’s expense, to a company that disposes of the equipment while being responsible to the environment. Over the past year, all laser toner and ink jet cartridges are collected and delivered to Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale. The Cash for Critters program has collected $1,500.00 as a result of the donations. The efforts in 2008 will center on constructing a dedicated area for the recycling efforts. The Green Team is currently investigating an alternative to the Styrofoam cups for coffee and to-go beverages.
Bob Kiesendahl says, “Personally, environmental responsibility is near and dear to me. Living in the area all my life, surrounded by hunting, fishing and nature, I see how important it is to preserve what we have. Being involved in a family business and as a large employer, I see that Woodloch can have a huge impact. We started with small grassroots efforts of recycling newspapers for the guest. That got a good response and we continued to build on it. We have a sincere concern for our environment, and we want to preserve nature on a personal and professional level.”
