Whitewater Rafting in the Poconos | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch’s Blog

Keep up-to-date with all things Woodloch on our blog featuring exclusive recipes, heartwarming stories, lifestyle content, contests and more.

A Complementary Activity: Whitewater Rafting in the Poconos

As we surge ahead toward summer’s arrival, it’s impossible not to daydream about the various exploratory adventures available at the award-winning Woodloch Resort. For families with adventurous adolescents, you’ll likely want to spend your afternoons fishing for largemouth bass, and water skiing atop Lake Teedyuskung, our semi-private, 15-acre body of water. And, while you won’t need to leave our 1,200-acre haven during your next classic summer vacation, we highly recommend connecting with a local river outfitter for a half-day of whitewater rafting in the Poconos.

Family-Friendly Whitewater Rafting in the Poconos

Whitewater rafting in the Poconos, mountain biking, and ATVing, is an especially exhilarating way to explore the region. Before or after your trip, seek out the guiding services of a nearby outfitter, such as Lander’s River Trips (Narrowsburg, NY), Kittatinny Canoes (Milford, PA), or Reber River Trips (Barryville, NY). As a collective whole, these three regional companies offer the top-reviewed Poconos river rafting tours. Rates, tour lengths, and launch locations vary, depending on the rafting company. All three teams strictly utilize the sheer power (and beauty) of the wide Delaware River, which also acts as a Pennsylvania-New York border. This particular slice of the Pocono Mountains is widely known for its deep gorges, lush forestry, and, of course, wild (yet inviting) rapids. Most trips cater to mid-sized families with adolescents and older.

Adventurous Activities at Woodloch Resort

As much as we cherish whitewater rafting in the Poconos, there’s just something truly uplifting and rewarding about being able to choose between 30-plus homegrown activities at a world-class, all-inclusive resort. Woodloch Resort, USA Today’s top-rated family getaway, boasts a seemingly countless array of on-site adventures on any given day, particularly during summer’s peak when the waters of Lake Teedyuskung feel as refreshing as a glass of iced tea on a sweltering afternoon. We mentioned earlier that fishing, and water skiing all perfectly complement four hours of whitewater rafting in the Poconos. But don’t forget that Woodloch Resort also offers all-inclusive packages that can include go-karting, archery target practice, rock wall climbing, championship golf, Summer Olympics, trapshooting, and many more exciting pursuits.

3 Spots to Hike this Summer Season | Woodloch Resort | Resorts Near Me

3 Spots to Hike this Summer Season

When you’re not making birdie at Woodloch Springs, indulging in a deep-tissue massage at The Lodge at Woodloch, or soaking in one of our refreshing pools, perhaps a nearby hiking trip will awake the adventurer deep inside. There are a microscopic amount of reasons to leave the grounds at Woodloch Resort. The serene surrounding nature is one reason. Check out these three hiking locales on your next trip to the premiere Poconos resort.

Bushkill Falls

Bushkill Falls is “the Niagara of Pennsylvania.” Bushkill’s incredible onsite hiking trails are what set it apart from most North American waterfalls. With four paths to choose from, hiking enthusiasts of all ages can experience this marvelous park. There are six waterfalls, all of which are visible from the Red Trail. This trek takes 2 ½ hours to finish so double-knot your hiking boots and bring plenty of water. The Main Falls on Little Bushkill Creek rushes with authority, but you can walk into Pond Run Creek and get a picture next to Bridal Veil Falls and Bridesmaid’s Falls. If you’re going to pick one area hiking locale, Bushkill Falls is the choice.

Promised Land State Park

Deep inside the Delaware State Forest, you will find the Promised Land. This natural paradise, sitting at 1,800 feet above sea level, is home to some of the best hiking trails in Pennsylvania. Conservation Island Trail is a must at Promised Land State Park. Take the loop around the island in the middle of Promised Land Lake to experience the park panoramically. Little Falls Trail is home to a small but stunning waterfall deep in the forest. Rock Oak Trail is for avid hikers looking for a half-day trip through marvelously tall red oaks.

Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary

Check out Dorflinger for a beautiful change of pace. Also home to the fascinating Dorflinger Glass Museum and the Wildflower Music Festival, this unique estate has nearly 600 acres of preserved wildlife and pristine hiking trails. Running Deer Trail has unobstructed views of the tranquil Suydam Pond, while Blue Heron Trail circles the aptly-named Trout Lake. There are over four miles of paths, and each one is beginner-friendly.

When your hiking trip is complete, head back to your comfortable Deluxe Lakeview accommodation for a refreshing beverage on your private porch. Then swing over to The TREE Restaurant & Bar before the kitchen closes. Savor a three-course meal and a glass of award-winning regional wine under elegant chandeliers. Woodloch eagerly awaits your arrival!

The Sweet Sounds of Summer at Woodloch

~ shared by Tammy Compton

Listen.

Do you hear that?

A child’s engaging giggle.

Water gently lapping at the shoreline.

Birds tweeting their sing-song message overhead.

A chorus of friendly shouts and laughter down at the lake.

It’s fun in the sun at Woodloch.

If memory-making moments have a sound, then that’s it. And trust me, you never get tired of hearing it.

The boss pointed it out to me the other day. Our shift had ended, and we were walking towards the staff parking lot when she turned to me with a question:  “Do you hear that?”

“That” was the joyous sound of children playing in the lake. Their shouts brought an instant smile to our faces.  How could they not?

“That just sends a shiver because to me it’s just the greatest joy to hear a child interacting with another child where they might normally be playing (alone) with electronic devices instead of  enjoying the type of games that we have here,” said Lynn. “They’re actually communicating and interacting between themselves and others.”

Lynn VanBlarcom, my boss, is the Reservations Department Manager. She’ll mark 30 successful years at Woodloch at the end of August.

“It does your heart good to be able to hear the sounds of summer at Woodloch. It never wears out,” Lynn said.

And she’s right. There’s something about the sight, the sound and the summer smells at Woodloch.

Take the weekly cookout for example, chock full of summer favorites complete with corn on the cob, grilled burgers and hotdogs, sauerkraut and chili, pulled pork sliders, bags of steamers, and then some.

There’s just no beating that barbeque smell, and as Lynn calls it, “family togethering” on the front lawn.

The other day, I was savoring my BBQ Woodloch lunch on the lakeview deck, just enjoying those sights and sounds we’ve been discussing. The sun was shining off the crystal blue waters  of Lake Teedyuskung as Woodloch speedboats cut circular paths with water skiers in tow.  Paddleboats, sailboats, kayaks and canoes gently bobbed on the waves with their captains at the stern. And a little girl with a bright green bucket carried pailfuls of sand to her beachfront creation.

“You’ve got the best view in the house,” I told the elderly gentleman to my left.  “I know,” he agreed, enjoying our shared view.

He and his family started coming to Woodloch 30 years ago, but he’s enjoying it anew through the eyes of his grandchildren.

“Woodloch certainly is beautiful,” I said.

Looking up from leisurely reading the newspaper, he considered for a moment before summing up Woodloch in one word.

“Wholesome,” he said.

I agree.
