Undercover Angels Deliver Joy in the Poconos

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life from what we give.” -Winston Churchill

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But in many respects, it’s also a totally chaotic time of the year. We find ourselves pressed for time, energy and resources as we cook and bake, clean and scrub, and shop for the “perfect” holiday gifts. We do all of this while simultaneously trying to enjoy lights displays, holiday concerts, television specials and more.

Despite all of the chaos, we all do our best to enjoy the season. But, perhaps there are even more fulfilling ways to celebrate.

The staff at both Woodloch Resort and The Lodge at Woodloch have proudly supported “The Woodloch Angel Tree” program for over two decades. Individual staff members and departments would select names and do some shopping for those less fortunate working within the Woodloch community.

The housekeeping team at The Lodge at Woodloch decided to take it a step further.

The Lodge at Woodloch Housekeeping Team

“Before Christmas of 2022, I had a meeting with my team,” says Linda Angermann, manager. “I asked the staff if they’d be interested in donating a dollar each day from their tips in order to adopt a child for Christmas. They all agreed and were excited to do so. We raised $150 to give a nice holiday to a child.”

Shortly after the holidays, the team met and had the idea to utilize this savings technique to span the entire year. Again, the team agreed. When the dust settled on a very busy 2023 at the Lodge, the team had raised over $2000. After a fun day of shopping, they were able to bring Christmas joy to over 15 children this year. Gifts were loaded into two large SUVs and sent on their way.

The team even had cash to spare. The remainder was donated to the charitable efforts of KidsPeace, which provides support in behavioral and mental health needs of children, families and communities. Across the Woodloch properties, 25 “angels” and several departments were able to bring a bright and merry holiday to 50 local children.

“My entire team is amazing all year long,” says Linda. “But they shine especially bright with their generosity around the holidays.  They are looking forward to breaking the $2000 mark for 2024!!”

Create a Bucket List of Winter Activities in the Poconos

A group snowshoeing, one of the top winter activities in the Poconos.

There is nothing better than waking up and seeing the ground covered by a fresh blanket of snow. For anyone who loves spending as much time in the snow as possible or enjoying quintessential winter activities, there’s no better place to visit than Woodloch. Once the temperatures start to cool, we work to bring our guests endless winter activities at our premier family resort in the Poconos.

A List of 6 Things to Do in the Poconos in the Winter

Our Poconos resort is found in the charming town of Hawley. During the winter, average daily highs sit around the mid-30s, and snow accumulation can really add up. These conditions mean you and your family can get out and enjoy some of the best things to do during the winter. One of the huge perks of making our Poconos resort your winter home base is we have snow-making equipment. This means that if Mother Nature isn’t on her game, you don’t have to worry about a lack of snow impacting your adventures.

  1. See who can fly down the snow tubing hill the fastest. Our lakefront area is transformed into a winter wonderland, perfect for this classic activity. We even host several snow-tubing contests.
  2. If your family is competitive, sign up for our Winter Olympics. The relay-style events are designed for all ages, which means everyone can join in on the fun.
  3. Venture away from Woodloch to visit Ski Big Bear. With 18 trails, seven lifts, and three Magic Carpet lifts, this Pennsylvania ski mountain is a go-to place for winter fun.
  4. Go for a magical ride on The Stourbridge Line. There are several seasonal outings to choose from, including the Santa Christmas Tree Express and Pocono Winter Wonderland Express.
  5. See if you can wow the judges during winter-themed Bakery Wars. Don’t forget to incorporate the secret ingredient as you battle the clock to bring your masterpiece to life.
  6. Bundle up and fill a thermos with hot chocolate, then set off to take in the annual Festival of Lights. Offered Thanksgiving through New Years, the half-mile trail features colorful displays you can experience from the comfort of a wagon ride.

For even more winter fun, check our tentative activity schedule.

How To Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

How To Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

Come the end of every year, a nagging voice in our heads returns like clockwork to say, “The New Year is about to begin. What should my resolutions be?” And so we are forced into deciding, knowing full well that by the middle of January we’ve abandoned them even though this year was supposed to be different.

But never fear, we’re here to change that! Read on for some of our best tips for following through on your resolutions and setting yourself up for success.

FIVE STEPS TO STICKING TO RESOLUTIONS

  1. BE PRACTICAL– The surest way to feel as though you’ve failed is to start with a goal that’s unattainable in the first place. Are you telling yourself that you’re going to run a marathon in two months when you haven’t been exercising for years? That’s probably not realistic, but with the right time frame and a plan in place, this is certainly doable! Which brings us to our next tip …
  2. PLAN, PLAN, AND PLAN SOME MORE – More often than not, we dive right in without a plan for attaining our goals. Set yourself up for success by being specific about your resolution and then deciding what manageable steps you can take each day, week, month, etc. to achieve it. For example, if you’re looking to be healthier, as so many of us are, start by making small weekly changes such as focusing on eating an extra serving of vegetables each day the first week, drinking eight cups of water a day the second week, aiming to get 1,000 more steps each day the third week, and so on and so forth.
  3. SHARE WITH OTHERS – If you feel comfortable, it can really help to talk about your resolution with friends and loved ones. They will be happy to support and encourage you. Going a step further, you may find even further motivation in buddying up with a friend or family member who shares the same resolution!
  4. TRACK AND REWARD – There’s a great quote, “Sit back and enjoy the journey. Success is found along the way.” When working towards a goal, it is helpful to celebrate each and every step along the way. Going back to the marathon analogy, each week simply focus on running a half mile further; that’s fantastic! Soon those half miles become full miles, then tens of miles, and before you know it, you’ve reached 26.2 miles! And don’t forget to celebrate your milestones on the path. Rewards such as new workout clothes, a massage, a nice dinner out, etc. help keep the motivation going.
  5. BE KIND TO YOURSELF AND KEEP GOING – We are truly our own biggest critics, and being kind to yourself is easier said than done. However, it’s crucial to remember this, especially when you embark upon a new journey. If you have a hard time remembering, it may be helpful to write positive affirmations on post-it notes and place them in areas you see each day, i.e. the bathroom mirror, in your car, on your desk. Do the best you can each day, and take it one day at a time. Setbacks are bound to happen, but every day is a new opportunity to recommit yourself and get back on track.

GO FOR IT

There you have it… just a few suggestions from our team that will hopefully guide you to achieving your goals for the upcoming year. Every January (and really, every day) offers the opportunity for a clean slate- so we encourage you to go for it! A beautiful new year awaits, and we are here to cheer you on!
