"The Winds of Winter" – Major Poconos Snowstorms through History | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch Pines sign after snow storm.

“The Winds of Winter”

A brief history of major Pennsylvanian snow storms at our resort!

Love it or hate it, it’s “snow” secret that colder weather is moving in for the long haul!

Our corner of the Pocono Mountains is infamous for some mega winter storms! While it’s yet to be seen if 2023 will feature historic snowfall, let’s take a moment to reminisce about some of the more memorable blizzards of our past!

1958

Believe it or not, just a few short weeks before Woodloch was purchased, Northeastern Pennsylvania was hit by four nasty winter storms in succession between early February and March, with snow piling up well over 90 inches in spots. United States Marines were called in to help those perilously trapped. Helicopters were brought in to rescue those well out of reach of any help. Weeks later, as the snow melted, Harry and Mary Kiesendahl purchased what is now our resort for $45,000, and the era of Woodloch began!

1971

An enormous, early-season, coastal storm that brought rain and 63 mph wind gusts to New York City also happened to bring almost 2 feet of snow to the hills of Northeastern Pennsylvania… on Thanksgiving weekend, no less!

The snow was very heavy and caused several trees to come down on electrical lines, killing the power just as Woodloch began to prepare their Thanksgiving feasts for our guests.

In what forever after would be known as “The Thanksgiving of 22 Frozen Turkeys”, guests settled for bologna sandwiches while hanging by the fireplace with blankets to keep warm. Not ideal, but it certainly brought us all together, and for that, we were truly thankful!

FUN FACT: This storm prompted Woodloch to purchase a generator for our kitchen and Main Lobby! Lesson learned!

1993

They called it “The Storm of the Century,” “The Grandaddy of Them All” and of course, “The Blizzard of 1993.” This unprecedented storm wreaked havoc on the entire east coast of the United States, extending from Canada to Honduras. It even brought snow to regions like Georgia and Alabama.

Needless to say, Pennsylvania got hit HARD. Local snowfall totals exceeded 35 inches while winds swirled at upwards of 70 miles per hour, causing monumental snow drifts.

I was eight years old at the time. I remember wanting to sled through the powder but settled for just jumping off the side of the deck into huge piles of snow. Meanwhile, my dad (gung ho on making the 18 mile commute to work here at Woodloch) attempted to dig his truck out of our driveway manually, only to find our road closed… with plow trucks stuck themselves! Schools were closed for a full week. (ed.)

1996

After the catastrophic Great Storm of 1993, history simply couldn’t repeat itself… could it? It came very close.

In early January 1996, a coastal winter storm was followed up by an “Alberta Clipper” from Canada, providing a vicious one-two punch of walloping wintry weather. Snowfall totals eclipsed 20” from New York City all the way to the Poconos.

Even worse temperatures were warmer than usual for January and the melting snow created flooding problems region wide.

2017

Just as we thought winter was over, Mother Nature proved otherwise. The Blizzard of 2017 ended up dumping just about 30 inches of snow over our corner of the Poconos in mid-March. There were widespread power outages, impassible roads, National Guard dispatches and even suspension of postal service… yet Woodloch remained open. Even crazier, our president and CEO John was on vacation at the time, pushing the third generation of Kiesendahls to step up and manage the crisis.

With employees not being able to get to work or back home, many staff members were stuck here for several days “I still remember a group of eight staff members going around and shoveling each other’s cars out after being at Woodloch for 48 hours straight,” says Patrick Kiesendahl. “We even all rallied and pushed a car up a hill after we shoveled. That type of camaraderie and teamwork can only be found at Woodloch. It was a difficult time, but we came out feeling a lot of confidence about the future after that. We got together, figured out a game plan and then dispersed and handled our areas.”

Gigi’s Coffee House opens up at Woodloch! | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch’s Blog

Keep up-to-date with all things Woodloch on our blog featuring exclusive recipes, heartwarming stories, lifestyle content, contests and more.

Woodloch’s Coffee Shop is open for business!

I’m not writing this blog until I get my coffee. So just hold up for a few.

….

………

……………..

…aaaaannnd we’re good to go.

Americans just LOVE coffee. Every day, about 400 million cups are consumed in the US- that ends up equaling about 146 billion every year. And that’s just here- it turns out that just behind oil, it is the second most globally traded commodity. Outside of water, there is no more popular beverage on earth.

Understanding this insatiable human need, Woodloch is proud to be featuring a new addition to our property that combines delicious java with history, family and plenty of love.

Gigi’s is the newly opened coffee shop at Woodloch Resort. Nestled on “the front lawn” just outside our main lodge is a building that has stood at our resort almost since our inception in 1958. During the early years, Mary Kiesendahl’s mother, Grandma Mould, or “Gigi” as her grandchildren called her, lived in a small cottage right in the middle of the action.

As with all family members, Gigi was involved with helping out at the resort. She was always in our kitchen, helping with food preparation, including rolling our famous “Scandanavian Pancakes” each morning. “We’d go to visit her, and she’d always have special cookies for us while she enjoyed her tea,” says Bob Kiesendahl.   “I always felt her small, humble home was the most loving place at Woodloch.”

A bright and worldly woman, Elizabeth Mould was an avid reader and as a Daughter of the Revolution, true American patriot. She’d knit, crochet and ultimately was a seamstress for the resort in the early days, making uniforms for the staff and costumes for evening shows. An important influence to the Woodloch tradition, the building (which over the years has been a guest accommodation, beauty salon, security office and marketing office) has been lovingly renovated to capture the essence of who “Gigi” was as a person.

While all of our guests know that our house coffee urns are always filled to the brim in our lobby, Woodloch is now venturing into premium mocha beverage territory. Opening daily at 7 am for early risers, coffee lovers (and those who certainly might just join their ranks) can enjoy all sorts of deliciousness, including:

Lattes (hot & cold) // Cappuccino // Macchiato // Espresso // Chai Tea // Hot Tea // Hot Chocolate

Fresh Brewed Coffee // Iced Coffee // Cold Brew Coffee // Frozen Blended Espresso Beverages // Fresh Fruit Smoothies

Plus, delicious Woodloch fresh baked goodies like muffins, pastries, scones, biscotti, seasonal favorites and more to accent a delicious cup of joe, with fresh roasted beans provided from Black & Brass Coffee in Honesdale. Gigi’s will also provide a variety of fresh salads, sandwiches and more for a light afternoon lunch so you can get right back to all of the fun and adventure that awaits you during your Woodloch escape.

We’ll keep on roasting up a storm- come visit us during your next Woodloch stay!

Local Historical Treasures Surrounding Woodloch

~Shared by T. Compton

I am soooo bored.

Ever said that? Heard your kids, siblings, friends say that? I’d hazard a guess that we’ve all said it at one time or another.

But, you don’t have to be. How’s this for a solution: Exploring what’s in your own backyard.

Thursday was an awesome day – marking the second annual Wayne-Pike Ambassadors Tour sponsored by the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau (PMVB) and PPL. Offering an all-day educational and historic tour of Wayne and Pike Counties, the program was most informative and also a lot of fun.

Guided by local historian and retired school principal, Tom Kennedy, and Wallenpaupack Visitors Center Manager, Keith Williams, the action-packed trip started with a stop at the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary and the Dorflinger Glass Museum in White Mills, PA. Museum Curator Hank Loftus coaxed history to life with his talk of Christian Dorflinger, whose glass factory was famous for producing some of the finest lead crystal in the country – even pieces used by President Abraham Lincoln. Who knew that sand, pot ash and lead oxide could combine to create such beautiful glass: sparkling stemware, kerosene lamp chimneys and punchbowls that seemed to all but dance in the lighting?

It was at the Columns Museum in Milford that President Lincoln’s name was once again mentioned – this time on a sad note – regarding the night of his death. Operated by the Pike County Historical Society, the museum claims to have the very flag used to cushion the President’s head following the fatal shot at the Ford’s Theater in 1865. A small derringer fills a nearby display case, similar to the one used to assassinate the 16th President.

A wealth of knowledge awaits at your local historical society.

Take the Wayne County Historical Society in Honesdale, for instance, which currently features the artwork of the late Howard Becker, detailed information on the Delaware & Hudson (D & H) Canal, not to mention the privilege of walking through an authentic passenger coach used by the gravity railroad, and the impressive, full-size replica of the Stourbridge Lion.

The maiden run of the Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive to operate in the United States, was over three miles, from downtown Honesdale to downtown Seelyville and back again. Weighing in at more than five tons, it’s interesting to note it was found to be too heavy for its four-ton track. Sadly, the Lion never roared again. That was August 8, 1829.

“Sometimes we forget to look in the mirror and appreciate what we had, what we have, and what we could be,” Kennedy said.

Perhaps a Native-American, 18-foot, dugout canoe is right up your alley. Viewable at the PPL Environmental Learning Center, the well-preserved, man made canoe surfaced on Lake Wallenpaupack in 1955, following Hurricane Diane. Lake Wallenpaupack, by the way, is 13 miles long, boasts 52-miles of shoreline and is the 3rd largest lake in the state, after Pymatuning and Raystown lakes. Amazing that the canoe was found.

Do you love beautiful gardens? Then you absolutely must visit the Grey Towers National Historic Site in Milford. As described by the U.S. Forest Service, “Grey Towers is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, first chief of the US Forest Service and twice Governor of Pennsylvania. Today, Grey Towers serves as a conservation education and leadership center, with programs that interpret the lives of the Pinchot family.” If you’ve not been there before, you’re in for a real treat. Be sure not to miss the Finger Bowl – an outdoor dining area built around a raised pool. Floating appetizers, anyone

Then there’s the Zane Grey Museum in Lackawaxen. To stand in the home of a man considered the father of the western novel, to envision him seated in his chair, feverishly writing about heroes and heroines, is beyond words.

When you get a chance, perhaps during your next visit to Woodloch, take a look around Wayne and Pike counties and all of the museums, historical societies, and points of interest. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
