Why the Pocono Mountains in the Fall Is a Photographer’s Dream

A woman taking photos in the Pocono Mountains in fall.

Vacations are the perfect time to create lifelong memories, and there’s no better way to capture and preserve those memories than with a photo. Not only is it a great idea to capture the joy on your loved one’s faces as they enjoy endless fun, but also the landscape that’s the scene of so much adventure. Visiting the Pocono Mountains in the fall is a photographer’s dream vacation for several reasons. Whether staying at Woodloch or its sister resort, The Lodge at Woodloch, it won’t take you long to discover why this spot during the fall is the perfect time to pull out your camera.

Vibrant, Diverse Fall Foliage

One of the best parts about fall is the stunning colors that take over the landscape. The Poconos boast a mix of hardwood trees, including maple, oak, birch, and hickey. This combination means an explosion of golds, reds, and oranges. The elevation changes also impact the foliage, creating a layered color effect. Go to top leaf-peeping spots like Prompton State Park or Route 6 Scenic Drive for breathtaking backdrops.

Dramatic Natural Landscapes

It’s not just the colorful leaves that make this area ideal for nature photography. From sweeping mountain vistas to serene lakes and waterfalls, the diverse scenery both on and near our Poconos resorts lends itself to creative compositions. Head to the docks to take photos of Little Teedyuskung Lake or Lake Teedyuskung. Places like Bushkill Falls offer epic backdrops that look incredible when surrounded by the vibrant hues of autumn.

Ideal Atmosphere and Mood

Autumn in this region brings crisp, clear skies and soft, golden light during sunrise and sunset. The sun’s lower angle creates warm, diffused lighting that flatters fall colors and enhances the texture. The cooler mornings also often bring mist and fog, creating a moody, ethereal quality to your photos. Embrace these conditions, which can help enhance the color saturation of your photos. Heading out on adventures shortly after sunrise or before sunset is known as Golden Hour, and is one of the best times of day to take pictures.

Surround Yourself with Mother Nature’s Beauty at Our Poconos Resorts

Now is the perfect time to book your autumn escape. When packing for your stay at Woodloch or The Lodge at Woodloch, don’t forget your camera! Our resorts, one ideal for families and the other perfect for couples, are the ideal home base for anyone looking to capture the beauty of the Pocono Mountains in the fall.

Both of our resorts in Pennsylvania feature well-appointed accommodations, delicious dining options, and endless on-site fun. For help reserving your stay or to learn more about our resorts, call 570-685-8000.

Get Outdoors | Visit a State Park in Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains region is the perfect destination for anyone looking to get “lost” in nature for a little while. Whether staying at Woodloch or The Lodge at Woodloch, our sister property, there are plenty of ways to surround yourself with Mother Nature’s beauty. In addition to exploring all the outdoor activities available at our resorts, there are several nearby natural attractions that are a must-visit for any nature lover. During your next visit, leave room in your itinerary to visit a state park in Pennsylvania.

3 Poconos Parks to Visit

The Poconos region is home to breathtaking scenery, and some of the best places to experience this beauty are state parks. These spots make the perfect day trip for anyone looking to enjoy a bit of exploration away from the resort.

Promised Land State Park

Perhaps one of the most popular options for our guests is Promised Land State Park. Found in Greentown, this spot is about 3,000 acres in size. The forests here are primarily beech, hemlock, maple, and oak trees. With two lakes and several small streams, there are plenty of waterways to go fishing and kayaking on. Other adventures to enjoy include hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, and more. There’s also plenty of fun to be had during the winter.

Prompton State Park

There’s also Prompton State Park in Prompton. This park is where you can find the gorgeous 260-acre Prompton Lake. With 26 miles of hiking trails surrounding the lake, there’s no shortage of paths that offer you stunning water views. Other things to do here include mountain biking, boating, and winter recreation.

Tobyhannan State Park

The furthest spot on our list is Tobyhanna State Park in Tobyhanna. The name of the 5,400-acre park is derived from an American Indian word that means “a stream whose banks are fringed with alder.” Spend time boating on the 170-acre Tobyhanna Lake, or see what you can find while wildlife watching.

Honorable Mention

While not necessarily a park, the Delaware State Forest deserves a spot on this list. Encompassing over 80,000 acres in four counties, the forest is filled with remote glacial lakes and bogs. Here, you can enjoy an array of plants, wildlife, and endless scenic beauty.

Recharge Your Batteries on a Poconos Vacation

It’s important to take a break from everyday life for a while and get away. Whether visiting a nearby state park in Pennsylvania or hiking on-site trails, there are plenty of ways to disconnect for a while.
