Water Skiing Returns to Woodloch!

person waterskiing.

The sport (and some may argue, “art”) of water skiing is, and always has been, near and dear to the hearts of many Woodloch guests and staff alive for many years.

Since 1960, water skiing has been not only a summer tradition for many but has also served as a right of passage for youngsters and Woodloch “newbies” alike. After going on a COVID-19 mandated break, we are delighted to announce skiing is officially back for the summer of 2022!

Every Memorial Day weekend, the waters of Lake Teedyuskung hum with the sound of speedboats, racing to pick up seasoned and rookie skiiers alike from the renowned “Teahouse Dock.” From there, staff members prep everyone with lifejackets and offer some final tidbits of advice.

Succeed in making it up, and you’ll be rewarded with two full speed laps around the 3 mile perimeter of the lake.

Milestone Trophies!

A PROUD SUMMER TRADITION

Shredding the lake has been a very proud tradition in the Woodloch family since the early days! So much, in fact, that the Kiesendahl Family even once performed a stunt show across the lake along with staff members. With Uncle Harry driving and his children John, Steve and Nancy in tow, guests were dazzled and delighted to see all sorts of tricks performed right before their very eyes.

Woodloch celebrates and recognizes skiers every year with their “ski club” cards. At weekly award ceremonies, guests who successfully took their laps receive ski cards, reaching different milestones along the way. Trophies are even given to those who have reached 10 consecutive years, with some folks with even 50+ years of experience!

HELPFUL HINTS!

Need a little bit of guidance to refine your skiing skills? We’ve got some advice!

  1. Make sure both your skis and vest are fitted snugly
  2. Sit in the water with skis UP, knees BENT and butt DOWN
  3. Keep your knees BENT and arms STRAIGHT
  4. Let the boat pull you- do NOT pull the rope!
  5. Gradually lift your behind out of the water until you are steady
  6. Keep knees slightly bent, but “go with the flow”
  7. Enjoy!

Waterskiing at Woodloch is for ages 13 & up and is offered Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

Crumb Cake Recipe

WOODLOCH’S FAMOUS CRUMB CAKE

The closest recipe we can get you to the coveted breakfast dessert you’ve come to know and love from Woodloch

WOODLOCH’S WORLD-FAMOUS FRENCH CRUMB CAKE

Crumb Ingredients:

  • 1 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 oz. butter
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 4 tsp. cinnamon powder
  • ½ c. shortening
  • ½ c. brown sugar
  • 1/3 tsp vanilla
  • 2 ½ c. flour

Cake Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3⁄4 cup milk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grease a 9 inch by 13 inch cake pan and set aside.

First let’s make the crumb topping.

Measure into a mixing bowl the butter, salt, granulated sugar, cinnamon, shortening, brown sugar, vanilla. Cream those ingredients together and then add the flour. Mix until the flour is incorporated. Set the crumb aside.

Next let’s make the cake part of the crumb cake.

In a mixing bowl cream together the butter and sugar. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla to the creamed ingredients. Scrape the mixing bowl and mix again until the ingredients are combined.

Add the flour and baking soda to the mixing bowl and mix until combined. Scrape the mixing bowl and mix again until the batter is smooth.

Spread the batter in an even layer into the 9 inch by 13 inch cake pan.

Cover the top of the batter with approximately 1 inch of crumb, covering the batter evenly.

Bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Insert a toothpick in the center of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is done. Add additional baking time if necessary.

Cool the crumb cake. Dust the top of the cooled crumb cake with powdered sugar.

Midwinter Recess At Woodloch!

Once the glow and glimmer of the holidays trickles past us, there’s no denying we can all find ourselves in a little bit of a slump. Going back to work and school, while necessary, becomes no easy task. The days and weeks seem to clump together in a mass of “blah.”

But alas, not all is lost. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that our professional and scholastic endeavors can continue virtually through the magic of the worldwide web. The earth has never been “flatter” so to speak- connection to our obligations is no further than a click and a Zoom call away. That allows us to go ahead and maybe even break a couple rules every once in a while. The bosses are none the wiser.

Lessen the blow of the winter doldrums with a little family escape to Woodloch this winter. Whether you’re going for that marquee holiday vacation or just sneaking off the grid for a few random cold days, we think you’ll find plenty of fun to be had here!

THE SNOW ZONE

One of the best things about our resort during the winter is an (over)abundance of SNOW. Mother Nature’s grand scheme is irrelevant when you’ve got an artillery of snow cannons at your beck and call. We create our first flakes once temperatures hit 20 degrees and continue fluffing up powder all season long. That means days of snowtubing for all interested and willing parties!

Classic Pocono Mountain skiing is not too far away either! Ski Big Bear at Masthope features 18 trails and 7 lifts and is the absolute PERFECT place to bring a young skier to learn! You can even score discount lift tickets through our front desk…

  • Band performing on stage.
  • Women in swimsuits sitting poolside.

FOR THE KIDDOS

Winter amusements go far beyond frolicking through snow! Busy winter days for young Woodlochians include a feast of activities indoors and out! Go karting, archery, and a covered skating rink will give youngins the chance to bask in the mountain fresh air while they smile the days away.

Warming up from the chilly air is as simple as taking a dip in our heated indoor pool, kiddie splash area and our indoor waterslide complex. Cookies and cocoa are always fresh at our Gigi’s Coffee House! Running around our indoor “Forest” playground complex certainly burns off any excess energy little tykes might have left in the tank while a spin on the bumper cars brings back that classic amusement park memories of days past.

  • Woman in a belly bumper in the winter.
  • Man with a young boy and girl roasting marshmallows.
  • Two people walking on Lake Teedyuskung in winter.

FOR THE GROWN UPS

There’s a lot we can learn from our children. Suffice it to say, adults can probably stand to cut loose a little more often though we sometimes lack the energy and conviction of our younger counterparts.

Luckily, a Woodloch escape provides the necessary tools to (sort of) fully embrace winter’s majesty. For the bold and adventurous, snowshoeing, trapshooting, and even winter disc golf provide plenty of opportunities to explore the snowy Pocono landscape. Great trivia games, wine tasting, art classes and of course hot tubs are just about the perfect way to unwind after a busy day in the elements.

Speaking of relaxation, a beautiful destination spa is just two minutes down the road at The Lodge at Woodloch. Recognized by both Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast, this world class luxury retreat offers treatments, classes and lectures, and gourmet dining beyond compare. It’s the perfect way to truly immerse yourself in winter’s majesty.

FROSTY FUN FOR ALL

Of course, we weren’t voted “Best Family Resort in America” this year for nothing! Between big team activities like Scavenger Hunt and Olympics, medal-earning contests including tube races and “Bullseye” Soccer, and nightly entertainment featuring world-class magicians, jugglers and live music, opportunities for quality time together simply never cease.

With the ability to work remotely, there’s never been an easier opportunity to sneak away from the winter grind for a few days. A little bit of frosty fun just might be what the doctor ordered- we won’t tell if you don’t.

Harry’s Lakeside Scoops: Open For Business!

It’s been a pretty warm summer. That’s for sure. It very much brings my mind back to “the dog days of summer” of my youth.

In days past, there was no more welcome sound in the summer heat than the faint “ting-a-ling-ling” of the neighborhood friendly ice cream truck, rolling up to your block to deliver much-needed relief from the heat to children (and children at heart) of the neighborhood.

Maybe you had long known what your next frozen treat off the truck would be, or perhaps it happened to be a “gametime” decision.  Your choice not only brought instant joy to your tastebuds, but clearly, forged lifetime memories that bring all of us back to a simpler time in our lives.

Woodloch is proud to bring some of that nostalgic magic back. We are proud to announce the opening of “Harry’s Lakeside Scoops,” the newest addition to our resort. Our all-new ice cream stand, nestled just between our lakefront and pool area and overlooking our historic Teahouse Dock, is open for business!

“THE SCOOP”

For the first time ever, Woodloch’s guests will be able to enjoy a pleasant array of frosty delights, including soft-serve and hard ice cream cones, homemade ice cream sandwiches, “Boomer Bites” and of course, ice cold drinks. Not to mention toppings galore- you can make your favorite sundaes! Best of all, all of the ice cream served is 100% homemade right here in our bakery. Flavors such as chocolate chip mint, cookie dough and the world-famous CRUMB CAKE ice cream will be available on demand- no need to wait for dessert!

HARRY’S LEGACY

Since Woodloch is all about tradition, our new building holds an extra special place in our hearts. “Harry’s Lakeside Scoops” is named after our patriarch and founder, Harry Kiesendahl. Long before he found himself in the resort business, Harry served as the beloved neighborhood Good Humor Ice Cream man for many years in his hometown on Long Island, New York. He later opened his own “Paradise Sweet Shop” in Huntington, New York. The shop featured homemade pies (proudly baked by the lovely Mary Kiesendahl), a wide array of goodies and of course, ice cream! Legend has it the shop had the thickest and best milkshakes in town- all served with Woodloch’s warm hospitality, while our resort was still just a proverbial twinkle in the eye!

Harry Kiesendahl (left) and his brother Joe at the Paradise Sweet Shop in Huntington, NY.

“Uncle” Harry’s legacy of coupling enticing desserts with the Woodloch brand of hospitality we know and love makes Harry’s Lakeside Scoops a welcome addition to our resort! We look forward to bringing all sorts of frozen goodness to the shores of Lake Teedyuskung this summer- be sure to drop on by!

From Closure to Full House: One Year Later

I had a really nice walk with my fiancé last night.

It was about 70 degrees, warm breeze intermittently blowing in, birds roosting for the night and fresh green leaves bursting from just about every tree on our block.

And all of this we did without the constrictions of facemasks.

I spend a lot of time these days trying to make the effort to enjoy things like walks. It wasn’t that long ago that I was terrified to even leave my apartment. 2020 was a challenging year for many, and even rougher for others. It’s something I’ve come to refer to as “the year that wasn’t”- so many birthdays celebrated through Zoom calls and text messaging; weddings, graduations and other special occasions either scaled down drastically or postponed altogether, and travel traditions either altered or flat out cancelled. It was a rough year, and comparatively most of us got off easy.

However, as we dawn upon the beginning of June, my mind takes me back to the reopening of Woodloch on June 5th, 2020. It was uncharted waters for all of us but certainly worth a little walk down memory lane.

      THE SHUTDOWN

On March 17th, 2020, Woodloch made the difficult decision to, for the first time ever, close our doors. At the time, we of course were optimistic that by April 1st, we would be able to reopen. This, of course, was incorrect. As quarantine dates were extended and areas were designated with “color zones,” the immediate future was looking bleaker and bleaker. Not only that, fear was a real thing.

Everybody was at least a little bit scared. Scared of illness, scared for loved ones, scared for groceries and food, scared for jobs. All of it hit at once- it was a lot to take in.

We were all confined indoors, with very little to do. That’s when we decided to start bringing a little Woodloch to everyone’s living rooms with our #WoodlochAtHome program. From craft projects, to do-it-yourself Olympics, our famous trivia games and Scavenger Hunts as well as our fan-favorite Horse Races, we did a little bit of everything to hopefully bring some smiles and normalcy to our guests and friends that needed it. The entire Woodloch community even came together for two nights of “Concerts From The Couch,” featuring highlighted Woodloch entertainers and some of our talented guests and staff, live to living rooms via the magic of the world-wide web.

      REOPENING

Woodloch was finally given the go-ahead by the state of Pennsylvania to reopen on June 5th, 2020 to just 25% occupancy. Things were certainly different all around- temperature checks for both guests and staff, no indoor dining availability at all (just takeout and outdoor picnic tables), and the trademark Woodloch smiles covered by cloth masks. Things were certainly different, but at least we were able to open.

Perhaps the strangest part of the “2020 Woodloch Experience” was our activities program. So much about what made Woodloch special were our events, amenities and entertainment, and EVERYTHING had to be retooled. For the first time ever, every event required advanced registration (via our new mobile app) – quite a shift in protocol from the usual loosey goosey nature of “activity surfing” we’ve enjoyed for so many years. Scheduling every individual group allowed for proper sterilization of equipment in between bookings, as well as contact tracing, in case it was ever needed. Even popular indoor trivia games were moved to a makeshift stage outside our North Lodge so all of our favorite games wouldn’t be missed.

With only 25% occupancy allowed in our famous Night club, evening entertainment had to be reconfigured as well. Our famous Broadway-style Theme Show had to be sidelined for a bit, but we were still able to book great live bands, magicians, comedians and more. To accommodate demand, tickets were issued to 2 showings of every night’s featured acts. Even our late night dance parties were able to carry on our outdoor patio with our “Silent DJs!”

As summer drew to a close, our state saw some dropping in cases and easing of some restrictions. We were delighted to have our indoor dining capacity jump to 50%, just as temperatures were starting to chill a bit for outdoor picnicking. A new challenge had presented itself- our traditional Haunted Hayrides as we knew them wouldn’t be feasible this season. With that in mind, our activities staff worked diligently with our COVID task force to create a Haunted Walk that was both socially distant and terrifying- a challenge, but we pulled it off!

      THE SHOW GOES ON

We gained more and more confidence and pride in the product that we were delivering, but were thrown yet another curveball. Right before Thanksgiving, new travel restrictions (including required negative Covid tests for travelers), stay-at-home advisories and a weekend shutdown of bars and restaurants became an obstacle. Usually one of our busiest times of the year, our resort crowds more resembled an off season midweek than that holiday weekend. But we were here, we were happy, and we celebrated with our traditional holiday kickoff Festival of Lights and Yule Log Hunt!

New Years arrived with a lot of question marks. Our annual big-time bashes were out of the question. How could we possibly capture that spirit without any indoor gatherings exceeding 20 people? During the Christmas break, our team put their heads together to create a “Virtual New Years Party”, featuring sets from all of our favorite house bands, highlighted entertainers, party games, and virtual DJing from all of our staff djs! Every guest had a guaranteed “Party To Go” that rivaled (and some might admit exceeded) even “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.” A beautiful fireworks display over our lake ushered in hope that 2021 would turn things around.

As winter set in, the fun continued at our resort, both indoors and out. Good news of a completed vaccine left some light for us at the end of the tunnel. Not only were we able to ease some more restrictions with dining and events, but Woodloch was also able to host several vaccine clinics at our Inn and Woodloch Springs Clubhouse as vaccines were rolled out into phases. As those vaccinated were slowly but steadily able to shed their masks and mingle, optimism for the upcoming summer season started to build.

Now, as we approach the one year anniversary of our reopening, we think a lot about summers of the past, the trials and challenges of rethinking almost everything we did, and of course about the brighter days ahead. We are all very grateful that with teamwork and some ingenuity, we were still able to provide a much-needed oasis for family and friends looking to get away from life’s troubles, perhaps moreso this past year than ever before. We learned a lot about ourselves, and certainly can all appreciate newfound perspective on what is truly important in life.

As Woodloch kicks off our 64th summer in business, we look forward to reinstituting all of our favorite Woodloch experiences… and most of all, reuniting with old friends.
