A Holiday "DeLIGHT"- The Festival of Lights at Woodloch! | Woodloch Resort

Holiday DeLIGHTS – Illuminating the Season at Woodloch

Clark W. Griswold has always been a spirit animal of sorts to us. That’s why every single holiday, you’ll find our sprawling Nature Trail covered from tree limb to limb with thousands and thousands of vibrant holiday lights.

Throughout the holiday season, Woodloch is proud to offer our illuminated “Festival of Lights” wagon rides. Family and friends alike are encouraged to bundle up and enjoy a half-hour spirited journey through our Nature Trail featuring beautifully shining lights displays celebrating the spirit of the season’s various holidays, as well as our favorite movies and more!

The buildup leading to our “Festival of Lights” Holiday wagon rides is months in the waiting. The process begins in late summer as bulbs are
tested- blinking, dim or dead bulbs are no good for showtime. “While our trail is getting prepped for our Halloween, new lightboards are being
built and painted by our talented staff, and we review literally hundreds of holiday songs, old and new, for the rides,” says Joey Ranner, Social Director.
“There is about a two week grace period between the Halloween’s conclusion and our first Festival- we simply MOVE to get it all done.” The rides traditionally debut Black Friday.

In addition to your favorite traditional holiday scenes, the team at Woodloch thinks outside the box when designing scenes. We’ve seen fluorescent “under the sea” aquariums, patriotic salutes to America, and your favorite characters from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away all make an appearance.

“It’s a never-rending quest to keep our rides fresh for returning guests. If a response to a ride is ‘we thought it was better last year,’ we consider that a big disappointment on our behalf. Bigger and better is what we always strive for.”

Everything ends with hot chocolate and even a visit from St. Nick himself. Of course, the rides are just part of the seasonal fun at
Woodloch. No December Woodloch visit would be complete without joining in our Yule Log Hunt, Gingerbread Wars, Holiday Scavenger Hunt and more.

Woodloch’s “Festival of Lights” run from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

Discover Pennsylvania’s “North Pole” | Woodloch’s Holiday Rentals

The holiday season is just around the corner. Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday we were gearing up for spring’s arrival, but 2020 effectively threw us all a head-high curveball. Despite COVID-19, Woodloch remains stronger than ever thanks to its “resort responsibly” wellness standard.

In fact, Woodloch’s holiday rentals have never been more enticing for large families in desperate need of a Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s escape into the Pocono Mountains. Today, we’re going to focus solely on Pennsylvania’s “North Pole.” Hint: It’s located along the northeastern banks of Lake Teedyuskung.

Holiday Season Packages and Festivities

While Christmas may look and feel a tad bit different this winter, we’ve never been more excited about welcoming back Santa Claus and re-introducing a bevy of our holiday-themed activities, such as the annual Festival of Lights, yule log hunt, and reindeer races. Combine an extended stay in one of Woodloch’s luxurious holiday rentals with a seasonally-inspired package, including the Christmas Break, late-autumn midweeks, and an “Olde Fashioned Holiday.” Every year, we wholly embrace winter’s arrival by munching on Christmas cookies, sipping on eggnog, and caroling throughout campus. Meanwhile, the whole family can join the “gingerbread wars” and embark on the brand new holiday scavenger hunt before sharing secrets with Santa and observing the dazzling Festival of Lights display.

Christmas, much like Thanksgiving and Independence Day, is a time for family, fellowship, and generosity. We wholeheartedly understand that many families are going to need ample space for homemade dinners, presents, and long-standing traditions. Thus, we present a bevy of on- and off-campus holiday rentals, all of which are equipped with multiple bedrooms, newly-updated kitchens, spacious living areas, cozy fireplaces, and private acreage (for those who want to build a snowman and create snow angels). These modernized holiday rentals were crafted with special events and outings in mind, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. These homes offer the warm secluded atmosphere that many families are actively seeking this winter.

The Ideal Family Christmas Gift: Plan a Surprise Vacation

There’s nothing quite like a surprise vacation with the kids, especially when it’s wrapped with a tidy bow under the Christmas tree. Santa Claus knows how much your family deserves an extended break from the city en route to the Pocono Mountains. It’s hard to imagine a Christmas-themed wonderland that’s more jolly and festive than Woodloch, the top-ranked family resort in the U.S. Saint Nick himself and his faithful reindeer are scheduled to visit Woodloch this December, just in time for your well-deserved surprise vacation.

All-Inclusive Christmas Packages

The “Ultimate Christmas Break” is tailor-made for a surprise vacation with the kiddos, as it runs from December 26–29. What’s better than a holly jolly Christmas at home, surrounded by loved ones and a mountain of presents? A four-day post-Christmas extravaganza at Woodloch! OK, so here’s how it works: Mom or Dad book the “ultimate holiday gathering” online, place the gift under the tree (From: Santa Claus, To: Fam), and save it for last. Just make sure there aren’t full glasses of eggnog around, because the whole gang is bound to leap, shriek, and high-five in a fit of joy. If you prefer to speak with a friendly reservationist, simply dial 800-966-3562.

Surprise Vacation = Unending Christmas Cheer

Woodloch’s village of employees takes Christmas to…ANOTHER LEVEL. Not only do we have Santa Claus on speed dial, but our annual Festival of Lights remains one of the most dazzling spectacles in the Pocono Mountains around the holidays. Meanwhile, the stimulating yule log hunt will keep the kids (and adults) guessing for hours until, of course, it’s time for some eggnog, sugar cookies, and perhaps a visit from the North Pole’s fearless leader! Other smile-inducing activities include the gingerbread wars, Christmas caroling, reindeer races, and hot cocoa around a crackling bonfire.

Snow-Packed Fun under the Sun

If you’re a good girl or boy this autumn, maybe Santa Claus will talk Jack Frost into providing some sunshine and moderate temperatures? Regardless, the family will be able to partake in dozens of homegrown activities throughout your stay, including snow tubing, ice skating, and, of course, the Winter Olympics, a hair-raising family-based competition for the ages! When you need to warm up, feel free to swish inside for a swim, a splash, and a crash.

It’s never too early to start thinking about the holidays. To learn more about a potential surprise vacation to Woodloch, please visit our packages page.

YULEtide Tradition Carries on at Woodloch | Woodloch Resort

YULEtide Tradition Carries on at Woodloch

The last of the leaves are gone. We all stumble out of our toasty houses a few minutes early to get our cars warmed up before our morning commutes. And my eyes are glued to the Freeform and Hallmark channels all month long. Yup, it’s safe to say that the holidays are HERE.

History predicts that there will be much planning, shopping, cooking and stressing in store for us… in addition to all of the joy and happiness, of course.

With of all the craziness, one can find release and escape (even a temporary one) by grabbing a hot toddy and taking a seat alongside a crackling fire. It not only provides heat to a room but also warms our souls and brings us closer together for much needed bonding.

One of the more interesting and ancient traditions that we still celebrate to this day is the Yule Log. Though it would later on have religious elements attached to it, the Norse tradition of finding a Yule Log stems back to ancient times. Every winter solstice, “the darkest time of the year,” people would hunt down a giant log and then bring it back home to burn. This ceremony was symbolic to Scandinavians as a “rebirth” of the sun and the promise of longer days. “Yule” is the Norse word for “sun.”

This became a Christmas Eve celebration for many Christians. While the wood burned, families would admit their faults and mistakes and reconcile sour relationships. They would also eat, drink and be merry (another tradition proudly carried on by our Woodloch guests). Burning this log, starting with the ashes from the year prior, was said to bring good luck to a household for the year.

The tradition eventually spread all across Europe and evolved. The English would collect enormous logs; some of them would burn straight through the 12 Days of Christmas. The French even invented a desert cake that looked like a yule log called a “Buche de Noel.” Some Americans even continue the tradition today. For instance, local New York station WPIX created a television special aired every Christmas featuring the log burning for hours on end so that televisions would become a “fireplace” for the day.

Woodloch Pines holds a Yule Log Hunt throughout the holidays for guests staying at the resort. The log is carefully hidden somewhere on the 135-acre campus. The hunt begins, and guests scramble about hoping to be the lucky finders. When the log is found, everyone returns to the hearth for caroling, good tidings, and the burning of the log. The finders are given a bottle of champagne as the congregation heads indoors for holiday treats. And maybe, just maybe… they might even get a special visitor from the North Pole!

Several times, I’ve had the distinguished honor of hiding the log, and it’s great fun for me watching guests scramble to find it. Even better is the sense of camaraderie and togetherness that follows during the good luck burning of the log. There’s something very warming about watching a group of 100 or more “strangers” come together to sing carols and spread cheer almost as if they are family.

With the Yule Log Hunt, Gingerbread Wars, and our heartwarming “Festival of Lights” wagon rides, Woodloch is a special place during the holidays. Outside of your own home, you’d be hard pressed to find a sport more alive with the holiday spirit.

Woodloch Weddings: A Guide to Holiday Proposals | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch Weddings: A Guide to Holiday Proposals

I think Billy Squier said it best: “Christmas is the time to say I LOVE YOU.”

Come November 1st, most of us tend to pack up the hokey spookiness of Halloween (I’m a huge fan) and slowly but surely start gearing up our houses for “the most WONDERFUL time of the year- the holidays!

It’s true- after we’re finished with the screaming and the maniacal laughter of All-Hallow’s Eve, our hearts maybe get just a little bit lighter. The holidays bring families and friends together across state lines, under the glow of beautiful lights, and maybe just for one brief moment, all is right in the world (until we get our credit card statements in January).

Perhaps this perfect atmosphere of family and love make it just about the perfect time for marriage proposals.

If it sounds all too perfect, maybe because it is. The two most popular days for engagements are Christmas and New Year’s. But perhaps it might even be wise to use the benefits of the holiday SEASON as a whole to surprise your soon-to-hopefully-be-your-fiancée with a proposal!

What are the benefits of this? Well, The Woodloch Weddings Team is glad that you asked!

WHY A HOLIDAY PROPOSAL?

THE SCENERY

It all starts with THE SCENERY. Where were you when this happened? With beautiful decorations just about everywhere during the holiday season, there’s no shortage of beautiful backdrops for your proposal! Think of marquee locations like the tree at Rockefeller Center in New York or Washington DC. But best of all? Even your own backyard becomes a magical locale with a little bit of snow and some Christmas lights! Throw in a couple of flurries and all of the sudden, you’re in a fairy tale.

THE FAM

Other than your hubby, nobody will be more excited to hear about your engagement than your family! So instead of informing them via Facebook/text/snapchat/whateveryoukidsareusingthese days, how wonderful would it be to break the news to EVERYONE in person? Holiday gatherings make that a cinch!

THE SALES

Let’s get real for a moment- we aren’t all made of money, and very few things in this world feel as good as landing a sweet deal. And just like blenders and those beautiful 4K televisions that will be on sale at big box retailers, so will engagement rings at select jewelers! Save yourself a few bucks and get a great deal on a beautiful ring that the love of your life will cherish. (You could always try the “buy and hide” tactic, but what are the chances that SOMEBODY might go snooping?)

THE OPPORTUNITIES

Not everyone is the hopeless romantic type, but if you can’t find a subtle cute way to pop the question during the holidays, well… you might be just plain hopeless.

A memorable walk through a lights display. A special ornament on a tree. Counting down to New Year’s on one knee. You get it. There are so many sweet yet subtle ways to propose that it almost seems like a wasted opportunity if you don’t.

THE BRIDAL SHOWS

It’s not a coincidence that there are so many holiday proposals- as we’ve discussed, it’s a great way to make it memorable! With that being said, many Bridal Showcases are held right after New Year’s. If you haven’t attended one, they are a great way to meet with venues and vendors and get many of your wedding details ironed out in one fell swoop!

THE LOVE

Yes, back to where it all began… LOVE. Love brought you to where you are, and the world just seems to glow a little bit brighter during the holidays. Who are we to deny what we’re feeling? Roll with that emotion, and let everything fall into place…

Just like flakes of snow.
