Midwinter Recess At Woodloch!

Once the glow and glimmer of the holidays trickles past us, there’s no denying we can all find ourselves in a little bit of a slump. Going back to work and school, while necessary, becomes no easy task. The days and weeks seem to clump together in a mass of “blah.”

But alas, not all is lost. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that our professional and scholastic endeavors can continue virtually through the magic of the worldwide web. The earth has never been “flatter” so to speak- connection to our obligations is no further than a click and a Zoom call away. That allows us to go ahead and maybe even break a couple rules every once in a while. The bosses are none the wiser.

Lessen the blow of the winter doldrums with a little family escape to Woodloch this winter. Whether you’re going for that marquee holiday vacation or just sneaking off the grid for a few random cold days, we think you’ll find plenty of fun to be had here!

THE SNOW ZONE

One of the best things about our resort during the winter is an (over)abundance of SNOW. Mother Nature’s grand scheme is irrelevant when you’ve got an artillery of snow cannons at your beck and call. We create our first flakes once temperatures hit 20 degrees and continue fluffing up powder all season long. That means days of snowtubing for all interested and willing parties!

Classic Pocono Mountain skiing is not too far away either! Ski Big Bear at Masthope features 18 trails and 7 lifts and is the absolute PERFECT place to bring a young skier to learn! You can even score discount lift tickets through our front desk…

FOR THE KIDDOS

Winter amusements go far beyond frolicking through snow! Busy winter days for young Woodlochians include a feast of activities indoors and out! Go karting, archery, and a covered skating rink will give youngins the chance to bask in the mountain fresh air while they smile the days away.

Warming up from the chilly air is as simple as taking a dip in our heated indoor pool, kiddie splash area and our indoor waterslide complex. Cookies and cocoa are always fresh at our Gigi’s Coffee House! Running around our indoor “Forest” playground complex certainly burns off any excess energy little tykes might have left in the tank while a spin on the bumper cars brings back that classic amusement park memories of days past.

FOR THE GROWN UPS

There’s a lot we can learn from our children. Suffice it to say, adults can probably stand to cut loose a little more often though we sometimes lack the energy and conviction of our younger counterparts.

Luckily, a Woodloch escape provides the necessary tools to (sort of) fully embrace winter’s majesty. For the bold and adventurous, trapshooting, and even winter disc golf provide plenty of opportunities to explore the snowy Pocono landscape. Great trivia games, wine tasting, art classes and of course hot tubs are just about the perfect way to unwind after a busy day in the elements.

Speaking of relaxation, a beautiful destination spa is just two minutes down the road at The Lodge at Woodloch. Recognized by both Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast, this world class luxury retreat offers treatments, classes and lectures, and gourmet dining beyond compare. It’s the perfect way to truly immerse yourself in winter’s majesty.

FROSTY FUN FOR ALL

Of course, we weren’t voted “Best Family Resort in America” this year for nothing! Between big team activities like Scavenger Hunt and Olympics, medal-earning contests including tube races and “Bullseye” Soccer, and nightly entertainment featuring world-class magicians, jugglers and live music, opportunities for quality time together simply never cease.

With the ability to work remotely, there’s never been an easier opportunity to sneak away from the winter grind for a few days. A little bit of frosty fun just might be what the doctor ordered- we won’t tell if you don’t.

Pocono Adventures: 15 Things You May Not Know about Woodloch

Woodloch Resort, USA Today’s number one family getaway, is beloved for its family-centered programming, countless homegrown activities, first-class hospitality, and sprawling acreage. By now, you might think that you know everything about our award-winning Pocono Mountain resorts. But truth be told, we offer so many unique experiences and classic Pocono adventures that it takes a small town to run this lakeside haven. Our friendly talented staff just about equals the size of Hawley, PA, itself. During peak seasons, we employ over 1,300 Pennsylvanians. As you can imagine, A LOT is going on inside our sizable yet homey natural multiplex.

15 Things That You May Not Know about Woodloch

One of Woodloch Resort’s main draws, aside from six-plus decades of excellence, is the fact that the entire package is bundled at one all-inclusive price. Many of our guests reside in some of the largest cities in North America. The fact that a Manhattan family can simply pack the car, hit the open road, and roll into Hawley without having to plan for more than 10 or 15 minutes is a serious perk. And, as you’ll see below, most classic Pocono adventures on or near Lake Teedyuskung cater to families of all ages. Without further ado, here are 15 distinctive features that you likely didn’t know about Woodloch Resort. Enjoy!

  1. Woodloch Springs Country Club remains one of the top-rated golf courses near New York City.
  2. We’re closer than you think. The resort is less than two hours from Manhattan, Newark, Allentown, and Scranton.
  3. You can save bundles by purchasing a seasonal package. And it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye on our rotating specials.
  4. Our live music, magic, and comedy is second to none, but did you know that Woodloch’s Theme Show dates all the way back to 1967?
  5. What started as a lodge, an annex, and two cottages that accommodated 40 people has expanded into a 1,200-acre, 1,000-guest complex.
  6. Thanks to those 1,200 acres, Woodloch can host a wide variety of gatherings including but not limited to weddings, reunions, and corporate retreats.
  7. Hawley’s Boat House Restaurant, a Lake Wallenpaupack staple, is owned and operated by Woodloch’s very own Kiesendahl family.
  8. Winter is the best season for family fun. That’s right, we said it. Who doesn’t love skiing, tubing, Lake Teedyuskung ice skating, fewer crowds, and deep savings?
  9. We cater to ALL ages. From the toddler room to bingo and cooking demonstrations, every family member will return home with a giant smile on their face.
  10. The newest addition to our programming, Woodloch at Home, is a treat that your family didn’t know it needed.
  11. Gigi’s Coffee House crafts some of the tastiest early-morning brews in the state.
  12. The Lodge at Woodloch is one of the first and only places to offer forest bathing, a rising American trend that perfectly suits 2020.
  13. Upon return home, guests can easily access the Woodloch Photo Store to purchase shots from their vacation taken by our social staff.
  14. Naturally, we host groups of girl and boy scouts.
  15. Ready, aim, fire: Take full advantage of our shooting barn, trap shoot, paintball fields, archery range, and archery tag during your long-awaited escape from New York City.

Pocono Adventures During Summer’s Radiance

Summer is fast approaching, which means it’s time to start planning that well-deserved extended break from the city. The recent global and national crisis has forced Woodloch to shutter its doors for the first time in over six decades. However, we’re on the cusp (cross your fingers) of our reopening date: June 5, 2020. For now, keep watching and participating in Woodloch at Home. And remember to take advantage of our ongoing specials, which can help save hundreds of dollars on an upcoming stay. To browse through our various indoor and outdoor Pocono adventures, please visit us online.

Woodloch… by the NUMBERS! | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch’s Blog

Keep up-to-date with all things Woodloch on our blog featuring exclusive recipes, heartwarming stories, lifestyle content, contests and more.

Woodloch “By The Numbers’

Woodloch is a busy place all year round! We dug around and found a couple of really great statistics to share with you- we hope you enjoy them!

  • Every year, we welcome about 80,000 guests through our lobby doors

  • Woodloch has 231 accommodations to stay in. That is equivalent to just about 938 beds and rollaways for our guests to get a good night’s sleep (which they will need!)

  • In Woodloch’s ever-growing catalog of things to do, we feature 187 (and counting) games, contests, and activities. That’s a lot to choose from when creating our daily activity sheet!

  • Summertime is our busiest season, and it requires a lot of help. During our busiest periods, more than 1300 employees work at Woodloch in front and behind the scenes… that’s just about a 1 to 1 guest/staff ratio!

  • Woodloch set up shop on Lake Teedyuskung in 1958. It’s a natural spring-fed lake that is about 3 miles around and is 30 feet at its deepest end!

  • We’ve been enjoying waterskiing on our lake since the early days- our best skiers shred the wakes at about 35 miles per hour!
  • Woodloch is a big place- over 135 acres at our main property. Thankfully, we have shuttle buses to help you get around- every year, they take approximately 18,571 laps around our resort, bringing guests from point A to B!

  • You’ll notice beautiful flowers adorning gardens spring through fall, all planted and tended to by our gardening staff! In fact, they plant approximately 10,000 flowers every year!

  • We are BIG on breakfast here! We roll over 55,000 of our famous “Scandinavian Pancakes” here every year (what can we say, our guests work up quite the appetite).

  • Speaking of which, more than 1,500 crumb cakes are sold to guests at our Country Store every year to share with friends back home (or… maybe not).

  • We do our best to stay “green.” Working with our friends at Blackmore Farms, we re purpose over 80,000 pounds of food waste into compost, which brings new life to fresh veggies that are used in dishes right here at The Lodge at Woodloch and Woodloch Springs.
  • One of Woodloch’s most popular desserts at dinnertime is our famous “Mud Pie.” It includes coffee ice cream, chocolate graham crust, fudge and whipped cream topping. We serve just about 36,000 slices of it each year!

  • Woodloch features a 700 seat theater which we call our “Heritage Night Club.” Every table includes a basket of snacks- we serve almost 1,600 pounds of pretzels throughout the year!

  • New Year’s Eve is Woodloch’s busiest package in our calendar year. We pop open over 250 bottles of champagne as we count down the New Year!

  • For several decades, Woodloch had a very limited marketing department- we counted on “word of mouth” advertising from our guests (and it worked well for quite some time!) Fast forward to 2023, we now have over 5 million web page visits every year!

Hip Hip HOORAY – it's National Plan Your Vacation Day! | Woodloch Resort

Hip Hip HOORAY – it’s National Plan Your Vacation Day!

There’s no greater tragedy than vacation time lost.

When I was younger, I was always told “First, plan your work. Then work your plan.” Perhaps the same sort of thing can be said of leisure time- “Plan your play, then play your plan.”

Americans like to work. So much, in fact, that even when our employers go and GIVE us vacation hours as both a reward and as a deterrent for burnout, that we simply don’t use them all. Collectively, 2018 saw us let 768 million unused vacation days go to waste.

This can be partially attributed to workaholic tendencies (another story for another time), or more objectively, poor planning. We get this wonderful paid time off (PTO), and horde it like squirrels preparing for a long winter. While it’s nice to have the security of time off banked, more often than not, it sits there and is ultimately forfeited when time is not budgeted out.

January marks #PlanForVacationDay, a day established by the U.S. Travel Association for individuals and families to sit down and allocate those valuable hours to good use! That way, you can map out the next 365 days of your life with vacation plans intact! Whether you’re traveling in spring, summer, winter or fall, you’ll be glad you took the time to do so!

Some facts and figures from the U.S. Travel Association:

  • 83% of Americans don’t maximize their PTO. In fact, in not taking advantage of these benefits, we forfeit about $571 in hours back to our employer.
  • 46% of households don’t plan for vacation in advance at all- younger travelers (18 – 34) are notorious for this!
  • 63% of Americans agree (myself included) that they desperately need a vacation
  • 54% of Americans are prioritizing exploring more of the US with their time off in 2021
  • Travel is good for the economy! If Americans maximized their time off benefits, it would create an estimated $151 billion in additional travel spending and about 2 million additional jobs.
  • Travel is also good for you! Multiple studies have linked travel to stress reduction, strengthening personal relationships, and avoiding professional burnout. In fact, professional performance is improved!

When you’re stuck at your desk working through the grind day after day, wouldn’t it be nice to have a shimmering beacon of hope down the horizon? Something to look forward to? What is better than planned quality time with family and friends?

Your friends at Woodloch want you to take advantage of this great and useful day! As a matter of fact, we’re even holding a special #PlanForVacationDay sale in January. Be sure to sign up for our specials- there are 4 seasons of deals at your disposal!

Fall Bucket List | Pocono Mountains Fall Bucket List | Woodloch Resort

Pocono Mountains Fall Bucket List

Turn your attention to the prettiest season of the year, autumn. Whether or not you consider yourself an avid “leaf peeper,” there’s no denying the awe-inspiring beauty of the Pocono Mountains during fall’s peak. Luckily for you and your family, Woodloch Resort rests along secluded Lake Teedyuskung in the heart of the Poconos.

When you visit our region, you’ll be able to enjoy fall bucket list favorites such as hayrides, bonfires, apple cider sampling, and so many more family-friendly activities. Every autumn, the lush forestry that surrounds Lake Teedyuskung transforms into a beautiful meld of marigold, amber, crimson, and kelly green – creating a vibrant spectacle that you only find in a handful of regions worldwide.

A Family-Friendly Fall Bucket List

Bucket lists aren’t just for us old folks anymore. Families, couples, and even teenagers are starting to hop on this fun trend. Creating a fall bucket list is perhaps the best way to plan, prepare, and get excited about an upcoming autumn escape into the Pocono Mountains! To ensure that your next vacation to Woodloch Resort is nothing short of flawless, we’ve pieced together a handy fall bucket list.

1. Hike at Bushkill Falls

A lot of families ask about a potential pit stop near Woodloch Resort, and we almost always reply, “Bushkill Falls.” For those of you who don’t know, Bushkill Falls is considered “The Niagara of Pennsylvania” because of the park’s rushing waterfalls and immense popularity. There are four trails which vary in length and difficulty. We’re partial to the two-hour, two-mile Red Trail which meanders past all eight waterfalls. The vibrant colors along Little Bushkill Creek “pop” while leaves slowly oscillate toward the earth, and the soothing sounds of the falls remind visitors that the Poconos are among the most spectacular sights in North America. Try forest bathing for the time fall here at Woodloch or when you visit Bushkill Falls, Promised Land State Park, or the Delaware Water Gap.

2. Apple Picking at Lakeland Orchard

If you’re from the Scranton area, chances are that you’ve already crossed Lakeland Orchard & Cidery off of your fall bucket list. It’s hard to top apple picking during autumn’s peak, especially for families with young children. Simply drive up to this gorgeous orchard, purchase a peck bag, and start sauntering alongside thousands of ripe apples. The kids will have apple slices at school for weeks and perhaps a slice or two of pie when they get home.

3. Go For “Leaf Peeping” Cruise(s)

Fall foliage tends to peak in our region from the end of September to the end of November- what better time to gather up the gang and take a nice little joy ride? Two notable stretches of roadways are particularly famous for their brilliant canopies- Delaware Water Gap and “The Hawks Nest.” But the reality is, beauty can be found on any little country back road you might find yourself on in the Poconos. More of the “sea-faring” type? There’s only a little more time to hit the waters! Grab a kayak, rowboat or mini-sailboat and set sail on the river or lake near you.

Pick a beautiful day, pack some snacks (or better yet, stop for LUNCH), and soak in all the splendid sights you can!

4. Hit the Links with Autumn Golf

With cooler temperatures heading our way, there may not be a better time to enjoy golf than the Fall. With so many great courses in the region (including our very own Woodloch Springs), the biggest challenge you’ll face outside of putting is picking where to play! Golfers of all ages are welcome to get swept away by Woodloch Springs’ vibrant colors while challenging their game on our award-winning golf course.

5. Hawley’s Hometown Hoedown!

Yee-hawww! Immerse yourself in the spirit of the season with local celebrations!” Visitors to “Hawley Harvest Hoedown” can experience everything from Lumberjack competitions, cornhole championships, shopping and dining through the downtown and lake district, pub crawls, and perhaps best of all, 100% authentic bluegrass music and dancing!

Not to be outdone, nearby Honesdale’s “Harvest and Heritage Days” are perfect for enjoying the history and charm of small town America. Be sure to catch hayrides, friendly scarecrow contests between local businesses, food, railroad excursions, entertainment and more. Make your visit extra spooky with walking ghost tours!
