Woodloch’s Haunted Walk: “Behind the SCREAMS”

Mornings are getting chillier and chillier, and the leaves are growing ever-more brilliant by the day- FALL has finally… fallen.

While it’s a bittersweet symphony watching the days get a little shorter and feeling the nights grow brisker, to many, it’s a more than welcome time of year. Let brilliant leaves come tumbling down, let the apple cider flow, and let miniature size chocolate bars and candy corns adorn store shelves. For many, this season is just about THE BEST.

In addition to enjoying a full menu of outdoor activities well into the season, one of the most exciting reasons to visit Woodloch during the Autumn
is our annual spooktacular “Haunted Walk.” Guests bold enough to venture into our haunted forest will be thrilled through scenes from your favorite scary movies, television shows and even the imagination. As if the Pennsylvania wilderness wasn’t spooky enough on its own merit at night, you can be sure to expect fog, tricks of light, and a whole cast of wild characters. All in all, it’s a half hour experience that will have you laughing and screaming all the way home.

The Halloween thrills originally started off as just a two night affair, with basic rope drop tricks and boom boxes out in the woods. “Halloween really grew and grew in popularity, especially at our resort,” says Joey Ranner, Activities Director. “As Woodloch expanded our program with costume parties, trick or treating, pumpkin decorating and more, demand for the our Haunted Hayrides grew almost exponentially.”

Preparation for the attraction begins just as the busy summer season winds to a close. “We now have legitimate stages and sets that need to be constructed alongside our Nature Trail,” says Joey. “Welding, wiring, painting, decorating, soundtrack selection… it takes weeks. By the time opening night approaches, we have just enough time to ensure that our guests are getting a fully immersive night of scares.”

And the best part? You’ll NEVER see the same exact ride twice. “Things need to stay fresh to keep up with new fears. For instance,  when Pennywise the Dancing Clown terrified theater-goers, we felt it appropriate that he made an appearance.” Who knows what sorts of horrors await this year?

Of course, those too timid to give our rides can enjoy campfire mallows under an October sky, family friendly acts every night on our stage, petting zoos and our less-scary Family BOO-lympic relay events. In fact, we’d say that you can bet your entire bag of candy that Woodloch will pull out all tricks to ensure that you are treated to an unforgettable Hallow-day…

Halloween Vacations in the Poconos | Woodloch Resort

Spooky Halloween Vacations in the Poconos

While we just flipped the calendar to September, families are already daydreaming about the spookiest holiday of the year: Halloween. From early October well into November, Woodloch Resort (the top-rated family resort in the U.S.) celebrates All Hallows’ Eve in style alongside hundreds of families from across the Northeast. Little superheroes, skeletons, and princesses can partake in a wide variety of playful, festive activities ranging from spine-chilling haunted hayrides to stimulating scarecrow-building contests. We’ve quickly evolved into one of the premier Halloween vacations on the East Coast since the emergence of our haunted hayride, but don’t forget about all of our crowd-pleasing amenities, such as the Broadway-style theme shows and our indoor splash zone.

The Haunted Hayride

Our haunted hayride improves each year as we continue to hire ultra-talented actors, add high-tech props, and insert new hip characters into our “monster lineup.” Unlike most Halloween vacations in the region, we feature a slew of brand new characters each year. These hayrides aren’t recommended for “little ghouls” as they can be scary for children (and even some adults). You never know who you’re going to encounter on this backwoods trail—witches, chainsaw-wielding maniacs, killer clowns, and deranged doctors have been sighted in the past.

Top 10 On-Site Activities

Not all of our Halloween-themed activities are as frightening as the haunted hayride. In fact, most of these activities, adventures, and events are geared toward guests of all ages, especially children. For decades, we’ve hosted thousands of first-class Halloween vacations for families—so, we’ve seen what works for the whole family and what doesn’t. To ensure that your autumn excursion to Hawley, PA is nothing short of flawless, we’ve compiled ten of our favorite autumn activities.

  1. Trick or treating
  2. Pumpkin painting
  3. Costume party
  4. “Halloween Wars” – a creative bakery-themed competition
  5. “Boo-Lympics” – Halloween-themed Olympic games
  6. Halloween scavenger hunt
  7. Halloween parade
  8. Scarecrow decorating
  9. Halloween arts and crafts
  10. Escape rooms (for an additional nominal fee)

Spooktacular Packages | Halloween Vacations

For decades, families have been escaping to the Pocono Mountains for great Halloween vacations because we have a passion for pumpkins, candy, and playful scares. We wouldn’t be one of the top-rated Halloween getaways near New York City without our all-inclusive Spooktacular Weekend and Midweek packages. Each package includes overnight accommodations, family-style meals, and a seemingly endless array of Halloween-themed activities. If you take a glance at last year’s itinerary, you’ll notice that you and your family can partake in upwards of 30 on-site activities in one weekend.

Fall Foliage Enthusiasts | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch’s Blog

Keep up-to-date with all things Woodloch on our blog featuring exclusive recipes, heartwarming stories, lifestyle content, contests and more.

For the “Fall Foliage Enthusiasts”

They’re called leaf peepers, a term that’s both embraced in their community and poked fun at by the general public. Foliage enthusiasts, if you will.

The stereotype screams hipster and middle-aged Americans who flock to the upper Midwest to view the changing of the seasons, often from behind the wide lenses on their cameras. They gather in groups – be it droves of RVs, local guided tours, pull offs on the sides of roads, camping excursions, or hosted Facebook events – they are simply very enthusiastic about the arrival of autumn.

But before you laugh at their expense, they aren’t the only ones with this form of fervor once the summer blues fade. Those of us in four-season states often cannot contain our excitement from late September through October. There’s the humorous pumpkin-spiced everything culture that surrounds this season. Orange, red, yellow, and brown make their way off the trees and into fashion and décor.

It’s an appreciation of change that isn’t scoffed at by many, and you don’t have to go as far as Northern New England to find it.

This map is a general guide of what to expect by region. Foliage changes differ annually and are effected by rainfall, temperature, and sun. Foliage maps are released with predictions based on the weather annually toward the end of summer.

Maybe we’re not all as ardently enthusiastic when it comes to autumn, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the changing of the seasons with zest. Besides, a trip through nature is still a trip after all, and we could all use a little escape before the chaotic holiday stretch that seems to begin earlier and earlier every year.

When it comes down to it, knowing when to plan your leaf peeping journey, even if you just use it as a casual hobby or an excuse to travel, is the most important part.

A “Course” in Excellence

A “Course” in Excellence

The Pocono Mountains course you’ve never heard of may be the best around…

TEE IT UP

In 1989, the grand plans were set to expand the Woodloch footprint. Based on years of requests from guests, the need for a golf course was apparent. It was to be an extension of the Woodloch brand–quality facilities, unrivaled service, a sense of family, and a tradition of excellence. Rocky Roquemore, a prolific award-winning international course architect was chosen to sculpt the mountain links, and in three short years the course at Woodloch Springs was ready. The project was not exclusively to serve as an amenity of the resort, but to thrive as its own destination and ultimately as a private community.

UNPARALLELED GOLF

Amidst a challenging mountainous backdrop, this course meanders its 18 championship style holes through 6,579 yards of fern-carpeted forest providing a unique playing experience darted with inspirational views. It’s also a challenge. Golf wouldn’t really be that special if it were easy, right?

The signature hole remains the 14th, a lengthy, challenging par five, which should be a six, that features a dramatic 220-yard carry across “Hells Gate Gorge.” It also has several elevation and route changes along its 577 u-shaped yards. However it is hole three which poses the most challenges with a 190 yard layup to the edge of a 45 foot drop off with a two-tier undulating green still 250 more yards away. Luckily, you’re rewarded with an arrow-straight, wide-green par three as your next stop.

THE GOLF ACADEMY

In concert with the Woodloch Sports Complex, the Woodloch Golf Performance Academy will help any golfer explore and understand the athletic relationship between their golf bodies and their swing (just like the pros) while maximizing their swing’s efficiency, mental performance, equipment setup and golf fitness. The PGA and certified fitness instructors and biomechanics coaches assess your game, develop a custom practice programfor you and unlock your potential as a player. Regardless of your goals or skill level, your team of coaches wants to help you understand and enjoy the game of golf to the fullest.

TIME TO DINE

There are two splendid dining options within steps of Woodloch Springs’ 18th hole: The Overlook Restaurant and The Grille Room.

The Overlook has floor-to-ceiling windows that peer toward the scenic 18th hole. Treat yourself to a center cut eight-ounce fi let mignon, lamb chops, or Icelandic cod after a particularly terrific round of Poconos golf. The Grille Room, utilizes the same farm-to-table menu, but the dining experience itself is more casual. The culinary team at Woodloch Springs also makes a delicious chicken cordon bleu sandwich, tuna poke salad, and weekend prime rib. And if you didn’t hear, after your round, your first beer is only a buck!

IT’S STILL ABOUT FAMILY

Home to one of US Kids Golf Top 50 Professionals, the course is designed for the avid golfer yet very accommodating to little beginners. With family friendly
golf carts available, kids tees, an excellent line of kids equipment and apparel, the standout is the kids golf clinic which takes young learners on a fun and interactive golf journey.

5. Remove from the oven and garnish with arugula and balsamic glaze.

Strawberry Lemonade Cake

Ingredients for cake:

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon table salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Shortening
  • 2 drop pink food coloring gel (optional)

Ingredients for strawberry lemon jam:

  • 2 1/2 cups coarsely chopped fresh strawberries
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Ingredients for frosting:

  • 1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 2/3 cup sugar, divided
  • 2/3 cup chopped fresh strawberries
  • 1 drop pink food coloring gel (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
  2. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended. Stir in zest and juice.
  3. Beat egg whites in a large bowl at high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently stir one-third of egg whites into batter; fold in remaining egg whites. Spoon batter into 4 greased (with shortening) and floured 9-inch round cake pans.
  4. Bake at 350° for 16 to 20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks, and cool completely.
  5. For Strawberry-Lemonade Jam: Process strawberries in a blender until smooth; press through a wire mesh strainer into a 3-qt. saucepan, using back of a spoon to squeeze out juice; discard pulp. Stir in sugar. Whisk together lemon juice and cornstarch; gradually whisk into strawberry mixture. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, and cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute. Remove from heat. Place plastic wrap directly on warm jam; chill 2 hours or until cold. Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 1 week.
  6. For Frosting: Beat cream cheese and 1/3 cup sugar with an electric mixer until smooth; add strawberries and food coloring (if desired); beat until blended. Beat cream and juice at medium speed until foamy; increase speed to medium-high, and slowly add remaining 1/3 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Fold half of cream mixture into cheese mixture; fold in remaining cream mixture. Use immediately.
  7. Layer Cake: Place 1 cake layer on a serving platter, and spread with about 1/2 cup Strawberry-Lemonade Jam, leaving a 1/2-inch border around edges. Spoon 1 cup Strawberry Frosting into a zip-top plastic freezer bag. Snip 1 corner of bag to make a small hole. Pipe a ring of frosting around cake layer just inside the top edge. Top with second and third cake layers, repeating procedure with filling and frosting between each layer. Top with last cake layer, and spread remaining Strawberry Frosting on top and sides of cake.

Fall Bucket List | Pocono Mountains Fall Bucket List | Woodloch Resort

Woodloch’s Blog

Keep up-to-date with all things Woodloch on our blog featuring exclusive recipes, heartwarming stories, lifestyle content, contests and more.

Pocono Mountains Fall Bucket List

Turn your attention to the prettiest season of the year, autumn. Whether or not you consider yourself an avid “leaf peeper,” there’s no denying the awe-inspiring beauty of the Pocono Mountains during fall’s peak. Luckily for you and your family, Woodloch Resort rests along secluded Lake Teedyuskung in the heart of the Poconos.

When you visit our region, you’ll be able to enjoy fall bucket list favorites such as hayrides, bonfires, apple cider sampling, and so many more family-friendly activities. Every autumn, the lush forestry that surrounds Lake Teedyuskung transforms into a beautiful meld of marigold, amber, crimson, and kelly green – creating a vibrant spectacle that you only find in a handful of regions worldwide.

A Family-Friendly Fall Bucket List

Bucket lists aren’t just for us old folks anymore. Families, couples, and even teenagers are starting to hop on this fun trend. Creating a fall bucket list is perhaps the best way to plan, prepare, and get excited about an upcoming autumn escape into the Pocono Mountains! To ensure that your next vacation to Woodloch Resort is nothing short of flawless, we’ve pieced together a handy fall bucket list.

1. Hike at Bushkill Falls

A lot of families ask about a potential pit stop near Woodloch Resort, and we almost always reply, “Bushkill Falls.” For those of you who don’t know, Bushkill Falls is considered “The Niagara of Pennsylvania” because of the park’s rushing waterfalls and immense popularity. There are four trails which vary in length and difficulty. We’re partial to the two-hour, two-mile Red Trail which meanders past all eight waterfalls. The vibrant colors along Little Bushkill Creek “pop” while leaves slowly oscillate toward the earth, and the soothing sounds of the falls remind visitors that the Poconos are among the most spectacular sights in North America. Try forest bathing for the time fall here at Woodloch or when you visit Bushkill Falls, Promised Land State Park, or the Delaware Water Gap.

2. Apple Picking at Lakeland Orchard

If you’re from the Scranton area, chances are that you’ve already crossed Lakeland Orchard & Cidery off of your fall bucket list. It’s hard to top apple picking during autumn’s peak, especially for families with young children. Simply drive up to this gorgeous orchard, purchase a peck bag, and start sauntering alongside thousands of ripe apples. The kids will have apple slices at school for weeks and perhaps a slice or two of pie when they get home.

3. Go For “Leaf Peeping” Cruise(s)

Fall foliage tends to peak in our region from the end of September to the end of November- what better time to gather up the gang and take a nice little joy ride? Two notable stretches of roadways are particularly famous for their brilliant canopies- Delaware Water Gap and “The Hawks Nest.” But the reality is, beauty can be found on any little country back road you might find yourself on in the Poconos. More of the “sea-faring” type? There’s only a little more time to hit the waters! Grab a kayak, rowboat or mini-sailboat and set sail on the river or lake near you.

Pick a beautiful day, pack some snacks (or better yet, stop for LUNCH), and soak in all the splendid sights you can!

4. Hit the Links with Autumn Golf

With cooler temperatures heading our way, there may not be a better time to enjoy golf than the Fall. With so many great courses in the region (including our very own Woodloch Springs), the biggest challenge you’ll face outside of putting is picking where to play! Golfers of all ages are welcome to get swept away by Woodloch Springs’ vibrant colors while challenging their game on our award-winning golf course.

5. Hawley’s Hometown Hoedown!

Yee-hawww! Immerse yourself in the spirit of the season with local celebrations!” Visitors to “Hawley Harvest Hoedown” can experience everything from Lumberjack competitions, cornhole championships, shopping and dining through the downtown and lake district, pub crawls, and perhaps best of all, 100% authentic bluegrass music and dancing!

Not to be outdone, nearby Honesdale’s “Harvest and Heritage Days” are perfect for enjoying the history and charm of small town America. Be sure to catch hayrides, friendly scarecrow contests between local businesses, food, railroad excursions, entertainment and more. Make your visit extra spooky with walking ghost tours!
